Turns out… not all honey is created equal 🍯
Perfect-looking food isn’t always the better choice… and honey is a great example.

Effortlessly Organic Living 13: Raw Honey vs Supermarket Honey
Why less processing can make a sweeter difference
Let’s talk about honey.
Because this is one of those things that seems simple…
Until you stand in the supermarket staring at seventeen jars that all say “pure”, “natural”, or organic-ish sounding words and suddenly you’re questioning your entire life choices.
Relatable? 😅
If you’ve ever wondered what the actual difference is between raw honey and the regular supermarket version…
you’re not alone.
And no, this is not a “throw everything out immediately” conversation.
It’s just a simple look at what changes between hive and shelf… and how to make a better choice without turning grocery shopping into a full-time job.
🌿 So… What Is Raw Honey?
Raw honey is usually honey in a much less processed form.
It’s taken from the hive, strained to remove bits of wax or bee debris, and then bottled.
That’s about it.
It hasn’t been heavily heated.
It hasn’t been ultra-filtered.
It hasn’t been pushed to look perfectly clear and identical every time.
Because of that, raw honey often keeps more of its natural texture, flavour, pollen, and seasonal variation.
Sometimes it looks cloudy.
Sometimes it sets.
Sometimes one jar tastes slightly different from the next.
That’s not a problem.
That’s actually the point.
Real food does that.
🌿 What Happens to Most Generic Supermarket Honey?
Most of the standard honey on supermarket shelves is heated and heavily filtered for consistency, appearance, and shelf life.
Why?
Because it makes it smoother, clearer, and more shelf-stable.
It pours nicely.
It looks pretty.
It stays consistent.
From a business point of view, that makes sense.
From a “real food” point of view… not so much.
Heating and over-filtering can change some of the natural character of the honey.
It becomes more about consistency and convenience than keeping the honey close to how it started.
That happens with a lot of food these days.
Basically, the prettier it looks, the more suspicious I get 😏
And yes, many supermarkets also sell raw honey too, so it’s less about where you buy it and more about what you’re actually buying.
🌿 Why Many People Prefer Raw Honey
For a lot of people, it comes down to one simple thing:
Less messing with it.
Raw honey feels closer to what honey is supposed to be.
It often has a richer flavour.
A stronger smell.
A thicker texture.
It tastes like actual honey… not just sweet gold syrup pretending to be fancy.
Because it’s less processed, raw honey also tends to keep more of its natural compounds like pollen, enzymes, and antioxidants. Some studies comparing raw and processed honey found significantly higher antioxidant levels in raw honey. One found up to 4.3 times more.
That doesn’t mean we need to start treating honey like a miracle cure.
Honey is still honey.
Which means… yes, still sugar 😅
But if there’s an easy better choice, and it fits your budget, why not?
Same philosophy as always:
Better, not perfect.
🌿 What To Look For When Buying Honey
This is where labels can get sneaky.
Words like:
pure
natural
Australian made
organic-looking branding that means absolutely nothing 🙃
…don’t always tell you much.
If you’re looking for raw honey, check for wording like:
Raw Honey
Unfiltered Honey
Cold Extracted
Local Honey
From a trusted beekeeper or farmers market
And if you can buy direct from a local producer?
Even better.
You get better honey and support small local businesses at the same time.
Win-win.
Also, don’t panic if your raw honey starts to crystallise.
That’s normal.
It doesn’t mean it’s gone bad. It usually means it hasn’t been overly processed.
Sometimes the jar doing the weird thing is actually the better one.
🌿 Perfect-Looking Food Isn’t Always Better
This applies to more than honey.
We’ve been taught that food should look perfect.
Shiny apples.
Bright strawberries.
Crystal-clear honey.
But real food is often a little messy.
It changes with seasons.
It varies from batch to batch.
It doesn’t always look Instagram-ready.
Perfection usually comes with a whole lot of processing.
Sometimes the cloudy jar is the better choice.
Sometimes the “ugly” produce is the best one.
Sometimes simple wins.
🌿 Your Next Step
Now, you don’t need to run to the kitchen and stage a dramatic honey audit.
Please don’t scare the pantry 😅
Just start here:
Next time you buy honey, pause for a second.
Read the label.
Ask:
Is this closer to real food… or just better marketing?
If raw honey fits your budget, great.
If not, that’s okay too.
This is not about replacing everything overnight.
It’s about making one better choice when you can.
One jar.
One label.
One step.
That’s how this works.
