Effortlessly Organic Living 10: Effortless Low-Tox Essentials
Seven basics you can find at most supermarkets and chemists (no specialty store hunt needed)
If you’re new to low-tox living, the internet can make it feel like you need to replace everything and spend a fortune doing it. You don’t. The easiest way to start is to reduce the number of products you use and choose a few basics that can do multiple jobs well.
Think of this as your “calm starter kit” — not a big detox, not a perfect overhaul. Just a handful of staples you can add slowly as you run out of things, so your home naturally becomes simpler over time.
The 7 essentials (and why they’re worth it)
1) Unscented castile soap (or a gentle, fragrance-free liquid soap)
This is a multi-tasker. A simple, fragrance-free soap can cover everyday basics without the heavy perfume load that often comes with hand wash and body wash. It’s also handy for quick, light cleaning when you don’t need anything intense.
Replaces: hand wash, body wash, light wipe-downs
Where it lives: bathroom + kitchen
Examples (optional):
Lux Body Pure Organic Liquid Castile Soap (4L) — bulk refill size for hand wash/body wash/light cleaning
2) White vinegar
Vinegar is one of those old-school basics that’s still useful because it cuts through mineral build-up and helps leave glass looking clear. It’s not for every surface, but it’s brilliant for a few specific jobs — and it’s cheap.
Replaces: some glass sprays, rinse aids, build-up removal (where safe)
Where it lives: kitchen + laundry
Important note: don’t use it on natural stone like marble or granite.
3) Bicarb soda (baking soda)
Bicarb is your gentle scrub and odour helper. It’s great when you want to lift grime without harsh chemicals, and it can freshen areas that get “stale” (like the fridge).
Replaces: abrasive scrub powders, fridge deodorisers, sink refresh products
Where it lives: kitchen
4) Fragrance-free laundry detergent
Laundry is a big one because it sits on fabrics that touch your skin all day. Many detergents are heavily fragranced, and a lot of “freshness” products are basically scent boosters and coatings. Going fragrance-free here can be a noticeable shift for sensitive skin, headaches, or “why does everything smell so strong?” moments.
Replaces: scented detergents + fragrance boosters
Where it lives: laundry
Effortless rule: skip fabric softener — it’s often mostly scent + coating. Basically, you’ve just cleaned your clothes and then made them dirty again!
Examples (optional):
Abode Healthy Home Products Front and Top Loader Zero Laundry Powder (4kg) — fragrance-free, bulk size
5) Washable cloths (choose your option)
This is less about being “perfect” and more about cutting waste and clutter. A stack of washable cloths means you’re not constantly buying wipes and paper towels.
Best low-plastic option: cotton rags, old towels, cotton flannels/facewashers — they wash well and don’t shed microplastics.
If you use microfibre: it cleans brilliantly, but it can shed microplastics—wash cooler, avoid tumble drying when you can, and consider a washing bag/filter.
Replaces: paper towels, disposable wipes
Where it lives: kitchen + bathroom + car
6) A reusable spray bottle
This isn’t about making a million DIY recipes. It’s simply a way to stop buying multiple bottles of basically-the-same cleaning spray. Even warm water with a tiny amount of gentle soap can handle most everyday wipe-downs.
Replaces: multiple single-use cleaning sprays
Where it lives: wherever you clean
7) A simple, fragrance-free moisturiser (or balm)
Leave-on products sit on skin for hours, so if you’re going to simplify one thing, this is a great place. A basic, fragrance-free moisturiser reduces unnecessary extras and is usually kinder for sensitive skin.
Replaces: heavily perfumed lotions
Where it lives: bathroom + bedside
Examples (optional):
Organic coconut oil — simple multipurpose balm for many people (great for body/hands)
Note: Coconut oil isn’t ideal for every face (can clog pores for some).

How to use this list (so it stays effortless)
You don’t need to buy everything today. The whole point is to make your next replacement easier. Pick one area — kitchen, bathroom, or laundry — and when you run out of something, replace it with one of the basics above. Over a few weeks, you’ll notice you’re using fewer products, spending less, and feeling less overwhelmed.
